Exploding Egg

Decisions, Decisions

Well, thanks to the efforts of some of my Portland friends, I should have a townhouse up there ready to go by late April.

I already know the neighborhood, since my good friends live nearby — and the managers at the apartment complex seem very cool, as was reported by my friend Ria.

Charlie, who lives nearby with his wife MK and son Declin

The place is supposed to have some sort of small community garden and outdoor barbecue area — mmmm, grilling.

I’m dealing with a bit of an ego hit, though, because being unemployed it looks like I’ll probably have to get my dad to cosign the mortgage with me. That’s not something I’d prefer to do at age 40, but I’m glad he’s willing to help me out.

So with that starting to come together I’m stuck back at another big decision, which is whether to fly or drive the cats out. I’ve been leaning toward flying them out, but at the same time, I think it’s going to be more expensive than it’s really worth — so now I’m leaning back toward driving.

The townhouse apartment I want won’t be available until the last week of April, which would make it a bit hard to time the flight out and back, followed by the drive. I still have to be available to close on my house on April 30, which means I have to be at least somewhat settled in Portland by then.

If I cut the flight bit out, it will save time and also probably around $500. While I worry about the cats being stuck in a cage and drugged for a few days, I could certainly spend a little of that on some nice cat rewards at the end of the trip. If I were a cat, I’d probably pick that option.

I have a few friends that have traveled cross country with cats, so I know it’s survivable — but whether Leo and I will have aged about 30 years from the yowling when we get into town remains to be seen.

I really hope my cats don't look like this by the end of the drive.

Anyway. I’ll keep you all posted. And feel free to post any advice you might have. I could use it!

Cheers,
-SueVo

  1. Do you HAVE to be there in body to close on the house? It can be done long-distance, with much faxing and scanning and lawyering.

  2. Yeah I’m closing on my house in Albuquerque from Portland — I just have to physically be someplace rather than on the road.
