Miami Medical: Calle Cubana, A Mouthfull of Good Chemistry

Jeremy, Jeremy, Jeremy (or should I say Doctor Proctor, Doctor Proctor, Doctor Proctor)… when are you going to learn to stop talking with your mouth full?

First the Miami Medical star (that’s Jeremy Northam, by the way) chit chats with the remains of a sandwich in his mouth on the roof of the hospital in 88 Seconds, now he’s chowing on some Cuban chicken dish while talking to Nurse Tuck Brody (played by Omar Gooding) in Calle Cubana.

That’s not to mention the overly dry chicken Proctor used as a prop in last week’s Golden Hour episode. Or the BLT he used as a description for thinking about a medical procedure in the Pilot episode.

You’re making me hungry, dude. No more food for you unless you plan to share.

Speaking of awkward behavior, Doctor Chris Deleo, played by Mike Vogel, ends up tom-catting his way out a window and down a fire escape to get away from some jealous boyfriend-husband-lover type at the start of the show — and he gets away only to come across a stabbing victim in a nearby alley way.

If I had a nickel for every time that happened to me, well, I guess I’d still be flat broke.

But hey, it’s just another typical day, albeit a busy one, in the Miami Medical surgery unit. A few awkward moments, a little humor and a lot of action.

Each week the show’s characters seem to come together more and the chemistry continues to get stronger. This week was no exception.

I think my favorite part of Calle Cubana was when Proctor was hanging out out on some side stairs making a paper airplane out of what looked like a patient chart, and Doctor Zambrano, played by Lana Parrilla, comes up to him, doesn’t ask him about the plane or the chart, but rather asks “why aren’t you on the roof?”

Proctor says something about the aerodynamics of the stairs being better, and the two discuss a patient while Proctor finishes constructing and then launches the plane.

It seems that his fellow teammates are getting used to the odd behavior of their quirky and mysterious leader.

Beyond the laughs, though, the second half of the show takes on a much more serious tone, especially when one of the team ends up on a surgery table as a patient. I won’t give up too many details on that story line in case some folks haven’t seen the episode yet.

But suffice it to say that we see deeper sides of all the characters, and how they’re becoming friends and getting to know each other better.

Next week’s episode looks to have even more goodies, including a flashback to Doctor Proctor’s scar-inducing incident. That, and it gives me an excuse to post this photo for all you Jeremy Northam fans:

CBS has a couple photos of Northam’s Proctor jogging and looking pained as promos for the upcoming episode, as well.

Heart attack? Maybe he shouldn't have had that chicken sandwich right before going for a jog.

Overall, I have to say Calle Cubana was another great episode. Hopefully the momentum will convince CBS to renew the show for the fall. It’s just starting to get really good.
